After the nightmare of 2016 we didn’t think 2017 would be worse. Well, it was. 2017 officially sucked but it’s almost over (thank God). That means it’s almost Christmas time. Oh no. That means mall Santas and endless loops of annoying overly cheery songs you’ve heard a million times.
I am going to hear gasps from some of you, but I can’t stand most Christmas music. When I go shopping for gifts, I bring earbuds and listen to anything that is loud enough to drown out the, “simply. haaaving. a WONDERFUL Christmas time.” There is one song that I will allow and actually really love. Its tempo is slow and its lyrics are mildly depressing, but it’s a beautiful song and you all know it, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
The song was originally recorded by Judy Garland for Meet me in Saint Louis. The original version’s lyrics were a bit different as they focused on her father/family moving to NYC and the uncertainty of what the year ahead will bring. No matter the version though, the song basically says this year was nuts but we are together now and next year will be so much better, I promise.
I won’t break it down line by line but next time this one comes on, really listen to the lyrics. There is so much feels packed into this song and it really sums up the madness that was 2017. This year sucked so just enjoy the time you have with your family and friends. Don’t think about this year or what might happen next year, just focus on today and trust that it will all work out.
OK now turn off the radio, chug your 4th gingerbread latte, and run around the mall like a madwoman for the next 6 hours because you still haven’t bought any gifts yet. Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
